Drew Waters could soon accomplish his dream

Drew Waters’ dream of being a first-round pick in the MLB First-Year Player Draft could soon become a reality. Baseball America ranks Waters as the 35th-best prospect, while MLB.com ranks him as the 39th-best prospect in June’s MLB Draft.
“I haven’t really thought about it too much,” said Waters about the draft. “I’ve just focused on playing. But I think I’m in a good position, especially after the high school season I had. I guess we will find out on June 12.”
A University of Georgia commit, Waters is a switch-hitting outfielder from Etowah High School in Woodstock, Ga. He’s known for his speed and ability to swing the bat with authority from both sides of the plate. He projects as a top-of-the-order bat that can steal bases and play an above-average centerfield at the next level.
According to MaxPreps.com, Waters hit .458 with 13 home runs, 35 RBIs, 14 stolen bases and 29 walks in 38 games this spring. Waters also led his high school team to a state championship this season.
“I expected this out of myself,” said Waters about his senior season. “I’m glad I’m having a great season, but I still have a lot of work to do. If I continue to work, get into a good program with good coaching around me and with my work ethic – the sky is the limit for me.”
Waters knows he’ll have a difficult decision to make this summer, deciding between attending Georgia or jumping straight into professional baseball. But, Waters is ready and eager for the future.
“College baseball is definitely a stepping stone,” Waters said. “We all agree the overall goal of a baseball player is to play in the major leagues. So if I get the opportunity and it’s the right opportunity, then I will sign and go play professional baseball.
“Whether I sign or not, Georgia is a great place to be. But, I’d love to go out of high school and play professional baseball. That’s a dream I’ve had since I was little.”
