Quentin Holmes not fazed by MLB Draft attention

Quentin Holmes

Quentin Holmes is a promising prep outfield prospect from New York. Although most players from the northeast region of the United States usually fly under the radar, Holmes is a well-regarded MLB First-Year Player Draft prospect with the potential to hear his name called in the first-round of the draft, which begins June 12.

Holmes is a dynamic player on both sides of the ball due to his blazing speed and is likely the fastest player in the 2017 MLB Draft class. He covers an extensive amount of ground in centerfield and is a major base stealing threat.

MLB.com ranks Holmes as the 33rd-best draft prospect. As a senior at Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School this spring, Holmes didn’t get caught up in the draft attention.

“Me and my teammates have a lot of fun with all the scouts that come around to games and practices,” Holmes said. “We have fun with all of that so it doesn’t become a nuisance to us.”

Prior to the start of his senior season this spring, the jury was still out on his hitting ability. Holmes’ goal was to improve his production at the plate and consistently make hard contact to all parts of the field.

“I’ve been hitting more balls into the gaps and getting more extra-base hits and more hard singles down the line,” Holmes said. “I’m happy with what I’ve been able to improve on.”

A Mississippi State commit, Holmes believes he’s in a win-win situation and knows he has two intriguing options ahead when deciding between professional baseball and attending college as a student-athlete.

“I know that I have a safe place to go to if things don’t work out in the draft,” said Holmes about Mississippi State. “I’d definitely feel comfortable going down to Mississippi.”
